24 Things to See and Do in Mt. Pleasant and Midland, MI

Michigan has a lot going for is as a tourist destination. For example, the state has the longest freshwater coastline of any state and when you include saltwater, it still comes in at second. Only Alaska has more coastline. Michigan touches 4 of the 5 Great Lakes and has many fun beach towns. As if that’s not enough, Michigan’s interior has some great forests, rivers, and lakes that allow for endless outdoor fun. I’ve been to Michigan many times and aside from one poor hotel choice, every experience has been fun and memorable. .

Introduction

The communities of Mt. Pleasant and Midland are near the center of the lower peninsula (aka the “mitten”). While not on the coast, the Chippewa and Tittabawassee Rivers run through the area and provide great recreation, scenery, and wildlife habitat. Therefore, it’s an outdoor lovers paradise.

It’s obvious that the arts are also very important to these communities. You can tell based on the amount of museums and studios focused on making art accessible to everyone.

Itinerary Suggestions

Gardens

Dow Gardens – Check out the 110 acres of gardens, forest, and water features. The Whiting Forest has the nations largest (1,400 feet long) canopy walk. The gardens have 3 miles of ADA accessible paths to help view the gardens. The estate of Herbert and Grace Dow is now a National Historic Landmark.and is available for tours.

Dahlia Hill Society = This garden showcases over 3,000 Dahlias (over 300 varieties). It is open to the public from July to October. And it;s FREE!.

Parks

Chippewa Nature Center – The visitor center has exhibits on the ecosystem, live reptiles, and a wildlife viewing area. Outside, you can explore on 19 miles of trails, or check out the homestead or sugarhouse.

Deerfield Nature Park – Deerfield Nature Park has all the amenities (trails, beach, sled hill, sports). In addition, there are some great photo opportunities with a covered bridge and two swing bridges. I’m completely fascinated by artesian wells (springs that have been piped to a faucet). There is one available at this park so don’t forget to bring your empty bottles.

Nelson Park – This pretty park offers access to the Chippewa River and other trail systems. It’s a pretty park with some unique photo opportunities in the gardens.

Bundy Hill Preserve – You can see some great views from the highest point in the county at this park.

City Forest Toboggan Run – I remember going to a toboggan run when I was a teenager, but it’s since closed like many others. However, at City Forest Park you can still enjoy this classic winter activity. Note: it is closed for the 2020-21 season due to COVID

Tridge – The Tridge is a unique 3 legged foot bridge that connects parks, trails and visitor areas. It’s definitely one of the most photographed places in the area.

Kayak, Canoe, or Tube Rentals

The Chippewa River is named the best natural lazy river because it slowly winds it’s way through town. Use an outfitter to rent some equipment and check it out for yourself.

Holiday

Santa House, The Northern Star, and Santa Claus School – The Midland Area Community Association created Midland’s Santa house to add festive cheer to the community. During October, aspiring Santa’s can attend Santa Claus School to better their Santa skills.

Travel Accessory

I’m a huge fan of the product and gift lists you see floating around the internet because I usually find some new-to-me product for myself, a friend or family member. I’d like to offer you the same inspiration by highlighting a travel accessory in each post.

This section contains an affiliate link. If you use this link to buy something I may earn a commission.

Sometimes you’d like a cup of tea, coffee, or apple cider when you’re traveling, but you may not have any easy way to water in your hotel room or rental unit. Or maybe you’re camping and you don’t have easy access to a microwave. This immersion water heater can help with that!. It quickly heats up water and is small enough for easy packing. It pairs great with these stainless steel mugs.

Final Thoughts

Those are just the highlights that stood out to me.  For more places to visit, check out the Midland or Mt. Pleasant tourism sites. If you use my trip suggestions or if you’ve visited any of these locations in the past, please provide your reviews in the comments. Did I miss something?  Please add other itinerary suggestions in the comments, especially if they are off the beaten path. Happy vacationing!
