The Missouri Department of Conservation describes the St. Francois Mountains as “a large, rugged landscape with the tallest wet-weather waterfall in Missouri (Mina Sauk Falls), the tallest point in Missouri (Taum Sauk Mountain at 1,772 feet), and the state’s deepest valley through which flows Taum Sauk Creek, an Outstanding State Resource Water. In 2009 this was the state’s largest designated natural area and probably it’s most rugged.” The St. Francois mountains are older than both the Rockies and the Appalachian mountains.

Introduction

Arcadia Valley, Missouri is a valley in the St. Francois Mountains.  It is home to 3 small towns…Arcadia, Ironton and Pilot Knob. The natural features of this destination are the reason for it’s appeal. Outdoor lovers will enticed by the rugged beauty. It would be a great camping trip for those who prefer a more rustic getaway. There are three state parks in close proximity which offer some truly unique natural features and stunning views. Much of the topography was created by now extinct volcanoes.

Some significant historic events took place here during the Civil War. The historic site at Pilot Knob offers a great opportunity to become better educated on the history of the battles that took place.

Itinerary Suggestions

The Parks

Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site, Pilot Knob, MO –  check out the visitor center and museum to learn more about this Civil War battleground and other important Civil War sites in Missouri.

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, Middle Brook, MO – A “shut-in” is the pools and rapids that occur when a river flows through a narrow valley or canyon. The shut-ins and this state park are beautiful and double as a unique swimming hole during summer months.  The rest of the park offers scenic hiking opportunities, camping and picnicking.

Millstream Gardens Conservation Area, Ironton, MO – If you love the shut-ins and would like to experience more, you can visit Millstream Gardens.

Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, Middle Brook, MO – Taum Sauk Mountains is the hightest point in the state.  Climbing to the top will be worth the effort when you take in the amazing views. If you’re a waterfall chaser, make sure you hike the trail to Mina Sauk Falls.

Elephant Rocks State Park, Belleview, MO – this park gets its name from giant, elephant shaped boulders that stand end to end like a line of elephants. The kids will be astounded by the size of them.

Royal Gorge Trail, Arcadia Township, MO – this link offers a great description of the trail.

A mountain bike park is currently under construction in Arcadia Valley and is expected to be completed in Spring 2021.

The Mine

Bonne Terre Mine, Bonne Terre, MO – this attraction is a bit of a drive (about 40 minutes from Arcadia), but I think you’ll find it’s worth the drive. Take a walking, boat, or scuba tour of a flooded mine.  They state that there is 100 foot visibility for scuba divers and call themselves the world’s largest freshwater dive resort and the world’s largest subterranean lake.  Those of us who are not scuba certified can gaze into the clear water on a walking or boat tour. They also offer lodging.

The Spooky

Old St Mary’s Hospital, Ironton, Mo – This isn’t an official attraction, but if you like all things spooky, take drive by the long abandoned Old St. Mary’s Hospital and see if you can experience any of the strange lights, sounds or sights reported by the locals.

Travel Accessory

I’m a huge fan of the product and gift lists you see floating around the internet because I usually find some new-to-me product for myself, a friend or family member. I’d like to offer you the same inspiration by highlighting a travel accessory in each post.

This section contains an affiliate link. If you use this link to buy something I may earn a commission.

I’m one of those Moms who always has a stash in the car…blanket, snacks, extra hoodies, beach towels, etc. This product would make a great addition so someone’s trunk or backpack. Need a clean place to sit and eat lunch on a long hike? Impromptu stop at the lake? This blanket has you covered and it’s small enough to fit in your pocket.

Final Thoughts

Those are just the highlights that stood out to me.  For more information, check out the Arcadia Valley Chamber of Commerce website. If you use my trip suggestions or if you’ve visited any of these locations in the past, please provide your reviews in the comments.
