“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.”
John Muir
Vacations are Important
John Muir was an advocate for the preservation of wilderness, naturalist, and co-founder of the Sierra Club, among other things. He understood that spending time in nature (in whatever form you enjoy it) is not just a hobby for some, but a necessity for all. The same can be said about travel. It allows us to take a break (or “intermission”) from our normal lives to get out of our heads for a while, focus on what’s truly important in life, and fill our mind with new experiences. For families with children, your experiences will be the basis of so many memories that your kids will look back on fondly when they’re adults.
“Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things can not be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad
Having new experiences, meeting new people, learning more about the people and history of this world…. these are all things that expand our perspective and make us more open-minded and empathetic. In a time when so much of the news is filled with divisiveness, finding common ground is so important.
Overcoming the Barriers to Travel
So why don’t people travel more? These are the common barriers:
- Finding the money.
- Planning and researching a vacation is a lot of work.
- Not enough time to plan or take a vacation
My hope is that Sublime Intermission will inspire you to overcome those challenges. For example, I hope you will realize that adventure is scalable to any budget or time-frame. And you can find it anywhere! Sure, an African Safari would be a great adventure, but if you don’t have the budget for it, then you can find an endless amount of fun much closer to home.
For a lot of people, researching destinations is part of the “work” that must be done before you can go enjoy your travels. For me, it’s a passion. I love digging through tourism sites, maps and travel blogs to discover those off the beaten path gems that will provide a unique experience.
I do want to be clear that I’m not providing travel reviews. Instead, my itinerary suggestions are compiled from years of research from many sources. If you use my suggestions for your travel, please stop by and add your review in the comments.
There are a lot of great websites to help you search for hotels, restaurants, and the typical activities like shopping, golf and spas. My focus will be on unique attractions that are specific to the destination. I will occasionally mention restaurants or hotels if there is something that makes them unique. Since I live in the Midwest and want to bring attention to the great destinations in my region, the focus of my blog will be Midwestern travel.
Are you ready to start planning your next sublime adventure? Great! Your inspiration starts here!
