10 Things to See and Do in French Lick, Indiana

French Lick, and neighboring West Baden Springs, started out as a lavish resort community for the wealthy in the mid-1800’s. The resorts were built by two doctors who touted the health benefits of the mineral springs. Tourists flocked in to experience the springs for themselves. In the present day, the historic resorts still offer access to the famous mineral springs as well and all the amenities of a great, full-service resort. French Lick and West Baden also offer great shops, restaurants and wineries.

If you stay at one of the resorts, you may not want to leave. Sometimes, that’s okay if what you truly need is some rest and relaxation. However, if you’re anything like me, seeing and experiencing new things is energizing and invigorating. Don’t miss out on the animal encounters, an unusual natural feature, scenic train rides, and more!

Itinerary Suggestions

French Lick Resort

French Lick Resort – the resort is a National Historic Landmark and has 3 hotels (West Baden Springs, French Lick Springs and Valley Tower), but West Baden is the one you’ve probably seen in photographs with it’s atrium that spans 200 feet. The hotels were renovated in the 90’s to bring them into the glory you find them in today.  They offer restaurants, spas, bowling, horseback riding, a casino and golf courses. Don’t forget to visit the spa to soak in the mineral springs that caused the town to become famous. Even if you’re not staying at the resort, you can schedule a tour of the historic property through Indiana Landmarks tours.

Animals

Wilstem Wildlife Park – With over 1,000 acres, Wilstern offers plenty of fun experiences. View over 40 species of animals from your car as you drive through their safari park. During the holidays they also have a drive through light show. If you prefer something more thrilling, try the zipline, rent an ATV or go horseback riding.  However, the most exciting thing at Wilstern are the animal encounters.  Get up close and personal with grizzlies, elephants, giraffes, sloths or kangaroos.

Outdoors

Paoli Peaks – In winter months, you can go skiing at nearby Paoli Peaks. Or, if you’re uncoordinated like me…snow tubing!

Wesley Chapel Gulf – I always love checking out unique natural features while I’m traveling so this would definitely make my list.  It’s even designated as a National Natural Landmark.  It’s and area where the river has started to run underground due to collapsed sinkholes and the rock eroding.

Patoka Lake – There is no end to the surprising things you can learn about the Midwest! Freshwater jellyfish?! Patoka Lake has them! The DNR website says that you’re most likely to see them in August or September. And don’t worry…they won’t sting you like their saltwater cousins. If you’re lucky, you may also see Bald Eagles, Osprey and river otters in the wild (you’d have to be REALLY lucky for the last one). You can also view some of the local wildlife at the interpretive center where they care for rescued, native wildlife that can not be released.  The center also has exhibits on a variety of natural topics.

Train Rides

French Lick Scenic Railway – the scenic railway offers scenic rides through the Hoosier National Forest and through the second longest tunnel in Indiana.  Some are focused on kids and some are better suited for date night or girls night out.

Museums

French Lick West Baden Museum – Do you love the circus?  Visit the world’s largest circus diorama!  At this museum you’ll learn more about the interesting history of the two communities including the circus, mineral springs, gambling, and……wait for it….Larry Bird!

Body Reflections Hair Museum – If you’re looking for a truly unique activity, how about going to view Elvis Presley’s hair? When I read about the hair museum in Kansas City, I assumed it must be the only one of it’s kind. But you know what they say about assuming!  In addition to Elvis’ hair, the museum also has vintage hair implements and other hair related items. While you’re there, you may as well get a hair cut too.

Facility Tour

Spirits of French Lick – take a tour of the distillery and then stop by the cafe to grab a bite and  sample some of the spirits that are handcrafted locally.

Amish Goods

Do you love Amish baked goods, furniture or handcrafted items? Extend your trip by a day and visit the Gastof Amish Village. It’s only 45 minutes from French Lick so it’s easy to add it to your itinerary. They even have an Inn if you’d like to spend the night.

Travel Accessory

I’m a huge fan of the product and gift lists you see floating around the internet because I usually find some new-to-me product for myself, a friend or family member. I’d like to offer you the same inspiration by highlighting a travel accessory in each post.

When you’re sleeping in a new place, the unfamiliar sounds can sometimes keep you awake. People taking in the hallway, the sound of the heater or AC kicking in, someone watching TV in the next room. These soft sleep headphones will help you overcome those issues. It’s created to contour to your face and block out light. The ultra thin headphones allow you to play music or white noise to block out the noise of your surroundings.
