Honey, an Octagon House and Outlet Shopping on a Dog-Friendly, Wisconsin Getaway

My family is smitten with our adorable dog (“Saphi”). Whenever possible, we bring her along for the the fun. Therefore, I’m always looking for dog-friendly destinations. This weekend getaway to Johnson Creek and Watertown, Wisconsin features a dog-friendly hotel and a great dog park which offers day passes. You pup will enjoy this weekend getaway as much as you!

Introduction

The Rock River flows through the area of Wisconsin that lies between Madison and Milwaukee.  The smaller communities in this area offer some interesting attractions within an easy drive of the bigger cities. The Watertown Chamber of Commerce describes the town as “a town of 24,000 people, halfway between Madison and Milwaukee, with the Rock River coursing through its historic downtown.” The Johnson Creek website encourages you to  “let the uniqueness of Johnson Creek treat you with our friendly hospitality, beautiful scenery, and one-of-a-kind excursions and amenities in Jefferson County’s fastest growing community.” I don’t know about you, but just the name of the town makes me think of a Hallmark movie.

Destination Specific Attractions

Octagon House Museum, Watertown – This local history museum includes several historic buildings including the octagon house, a pioneer barn and American’s first kindergarten.

Gobbler Theatre, Johnson Creek – Make sure you get tickets to see a show at the Gobbler Theatre while you’re in town. You’ll enjoy the show and the unique rotating bar.

Johnson Creek Premium Outlets, Johnson Creek – Their website promises that you will find “an exciting collection of 60 outlet stores from the world’s leading designers and name brands including Adidas, Coach, Columbia Sportswear, Polo Ralph Lauren and Under Armour.”

Honey Acres, Neosho  – I’m a huge fan of non-traditional souvenirs.  Buying food items is one way you can keep the memory of your trip fresh in your mind a little longer. Stop in at Honey Acres store to buy Wisconsin honey and honey products.  Don’t forget to check out the honey museum for a look at the history of beekeeping and get up to speed on honey production.

Parks

Jefferson County Dog Park, Johnson Creek – Don’t forget to include some quality time with your dog as part of your adventure.  Jefferson County has a dog park where you can let your dog run off leash and play with other dogs. Daily passes are available.

Rock River Park, Johnson Creek – Enjoy a picnic at this beautiful spot on the Rock River. The best part is that you don’t have to pack any drinks because the park has an artesian spring! Just bring empty bottles to fill.

Food and Lodging

Comfort Suites Johnson Creek – This hotel offers all the amenities I generally look for in a hotel, plus a few extras.  The pool has a small water play area that will make the kids happy and a lovely hot tub for the adults.  It’s also pet-friendly.

Berres Brothers Cafe and Retail Store, Watertown – I always love stopping in at independent coffee shops for a special hit of caffeine while I’m traveling.  Berres Brothers has a cafe serving a selection of roasted coffees and bakery items.  They also have a retail store so if you enjoy your coffee you can take some to brew at home.

Pine Cone Restaurant, Johnson Creek- Are you the type who enjoys a late night snack? Whenever you’re ready for a meal, the Pine Cone Restaurant is ready to serve you, 24/7.  They guarantee the freshness of their made-from-scratch meals. Don’t forget dessert…they have a daily selection of 10 pies and bakery items on the menu.

Mullen’s Dairy Bar, Watertown – Satisfy your sweet tooth at Mullen’s Dairy Bar, a family owned business that’s been around since 1932.

If you want to bring your dog to dinner with you, check out the dog-friendly patios at Culver’s or Fiesta Garibaldi.

Travel Accessory

I’m a huge fan of the product and gift lists you see floating around the internet because I usually find some new-to-me product for myself, a friend or family member. I’d like to offer you the same inspiration by highlighting a travel accessory in each post.

There is something so fun about an instant camera. It’s partly because of the retro vibe. But also because it gives you a tangible memento to bring home. If you’re traveling with family or friends, there is a good feeling that comes from knowing everyone is reminded of the great time you had when they see the pictures on their fridge.

Final Thoughts

Those are just the highlights that stood out to me.
